#Squarch 21: The Leland Waltz

It’s a Sunday in #Squarch, so it’s time for another waltz. I think I first heard this one played by Jenny Monfore at a square dance in Freeway Park six or seven years ago as part of some kind of summer program there, maybe Dancing ‘Til Dusk? I’d been on the lookout for good waltzes in cross-A tuning, and I think I made a very bad recording of this on my phone and went up and asked her what its title was afterward, then went home and found the Foghorn Stringband recording.

The Leland Waltz was written by Tim Foss, about whom I know almost nothing except that he plays (played?) with Chirps Smith in the New Bad Habits. I like this waltz a lot, and I don’t think I’ve played it in years. Here’s a quick take of it with Strum Machine on guitar and bass:
