#Squarch 3: Freda (from Carthy Sisco)

Today’s #Squarch entry: Carthy Sisco‘s version of “Freda”. This is originally a Kenny Baker tune, but as it passed through Carthy it got its part order swapped and the long bow style replaced by his own style. I’ve don’t think I’ve ever actually heard a recording of him playing it, but I have heard a recording of Scott Marcks, who played with him a lot, and I think I’ve picked up an even further modified version. I learned it in a jam at the Portland Old Time Music Gathering a few years ago.

As with others in this series, fiddles are me and backup is Strum Machine.

I think it’s interesting to compare this version to Kenny Baker’s, so here’s Kenny Baker:

  1. Hi Josh, it’s “Frieda.” I’m Scott’s wife (banjo) and Scott says you sound great on it. Voyager put out a recording of Carthy and we have more of his tunes if you want them.
