#Squarch 4: Twin Sisters

Oh, hey, it’s March Fourth; I should have done an actual march! Oh well. Instead, for this #Squarch entry, I’m playing “Twin Sisters”, kind of from the playing of Chance McCoy. I think this version of the tune goes back to Melvin Wine, but I’m not entirely sure about that. I think I first heard it as a tune I liked when Clyde Curley played it for a square dance calling workshop led by Lucas Hicks at the Bellingham Folk Festival.

This is a fun tune partly because it’s pretty much just an interpretation of the Irish tune “Boys of Bluehill”, and in fact I sometimes find myself ending the high part the way Boys of Bluehill ends. Here’s Frankie Gavin playing that.

I figured as long as I was playing a five-string fiddle, I might as well try to throw in a low octave part. I’m not sure it sounds quite right, but I kind of like the effect.

The accompaniment comes from Strum Machine, as usual.
