#Squarch 13: Uncle Pen

It’s the 13th of #Squarch and I’ve tuned the fiddle down to cross-F to see how I like it there. Turns out I like it a bit more than cross-G, and lot more than cross-A, so maybe I’ll do more of my cross tunes in F when I’m just playing by myself.

This is another tune I picked up from Nokosee Fields, this time from a (virtual) performance at the Santa Barbara Old-Time Fiddlers’ Festival in October. I think this one comes from Melvin Wine, based on Kenny Baker’s fiddle break in the Bill Monroe song Uncle Pen. If anyone has a recording of Melvin Wine playing it, please drop me a line; I’d love to hear that.

I should really start trying to play the bass myself on these, since that’s something I used to be able to do, and I still have a few basses in the house. For now, though, it’s still Strum Machine on backup and me on fiddles:

  1. Be advised that my Facebook post of a link to the ‘Postmodernist Generator’ provoked considerable mirth. However, my first several recursions/iterations of the page all referenced Foucault, leading me to believe you’ve fudged the algorithm somewhat, which, if not true, is itself a clever irony.
